Paws & Prayers is a worship service open to humans and dogs alike. Worshippers are welcome to bring their well-behaved dogs on leashes. Blankets and rugs are available for the dogs to lie on.
Although dogs are welcome, this worship
service is still about worshiping God. And, it’s about allowing people to be
with who they're comfortable with.
As reported in the Omaha World Herald, “Dogs are recognized for their
ability to comfort and calm. Long used for therapy in nursing homes, children's
wards and Alzheimer's units, they've also shown up in workplaces and schools, in
the Omaha metropolitan area and elsewhere. Research indicates that adults have
lower stress levels, as indicated by heart rate and blood pressure, when they're
with their dogs, said Lisa Karr-Lilienthal, a companion animal specialist with
University of Nebraska-Lincoln Extension.”
Judy Varner, president of the Nebraska Humane Society, says, “I think we're very
lucky to have this in Omaha.”
