Strange Spiritual Work

March 14, 2017 at 9:35 PM

"The Holocaust is a stunning reminder of the tragic results of prejudiced and hate toward other people.  But it is also a reminder that hope held firm will eventually reign victorious over the greatest of odds. The text in this song was inscribed on the walls of a cellar in Cologne, Germany where Jews were hiding from the Nazis during World War II. Hope was all they had to hold on to; hope was their only bridge to a brighter tomorrow."

And I have added - "Unfortunately prejudice and hate are still ever present in our world today.  From mass shootings to terrorist attacks, there are still those who will force their evil onto innocent people.  Like those being persecuted during World War II, we still believe that hope will reign victorious over the evil acts of others. Hope is still our bridge to a brighter tomorrow."

We might also print the text of the song on the back of the bulletin.

I believe in the sun
even when it is not shining
and I believe in love
even when there's no one there

but I believe in God
even when he is silent
I believe through any trial
there is always a way

may there some day be sunshine
may there some day be happiness
may there some day be love
may there some day be peace
